Santiago woke up for a second and scanned the area for possible threats before yawning and falling back asleep. Every twenty or so minutes he'd wake up and scan the area just to make sure everybody was safe. It was a habit he received from his years of wandering and, as they say, old habits die hard. Even though the time gap between when he scanned the area was large, if he heard any unusual sound he'd wake up almost instantly and check the area over more carefully. There was only one time in the past where he got attacked while sleeping, but ever since then he woke up occasionally as a form of defense.

Liam was looking at the fish that Koji and Misty caught. He realized his hunger, but was still unsure. He heard what Misty said and decided to take her word for it. He took a breath before lowering himself to bit into the flesh of the fish. The taste was sweet to his mouth compared to what he ate previously, but it still left a bad feeling. A feeling he kept to himself.
He was eating something that had once lived. Maybe this fish had a family that would never see it again. He then thought up a promise to himself. He would not kill unless he really had to. To protect those who are important to him. He finished the fish to the bone and, like Koji, left the head.

Misty suddenly woke up, she had this feeling that someone was unsettled, she kept hearing the occassional sniffing noise, she wasn't really sure what it was. Lying there she kept her head rested on her paws, and just slightly opened her eyes, glancing around slowly as to not make any movements to give herself away.
Letting her eyes rest on each of their group, it looked like the days events had finally caught up with them all, even tefnut had succumbed, curled up on her rock. Smiling to herself Misty let her eyes flicker over to Santiago.
I wonder how things are going to work out with him, we really need him in the group, he's a good fighter, not sure if today had of ended so good without him there....just wish he would think before he speaks, we don't want him and Tef at each others throats all the time.... and besides he quite fetching really with all that red mane
Just about to close her eyes again, she saw the lion give a twitch and his eyes came open . Silently Misty watched him check their rest area over closely for any danger, then he slipped back into slumber.
Lying there now she couldn't get back to sleep, feeling restless she quietly pushed herself up, and padded behind Liam, Dunston and Koji, making her way back down to the water. Not getting her paws wet Misty sat as close to the water as she could and leaned out and looked at her reflection. Just sittin there alone, all she could hear was the water lapping at the edge and the rustle of small creatures moving through the bush.
Not moving Misty just stayed where she was and let her thoughts wander, peace washing over her for now.

Dunston couldn't sleep at all, his leg wound was still irritating him. He tried his hardest to shut his eyes and doze off, but sleep refused to come. It really shouldn't be this difficult to get a nights rest! he thought. He finally gave up on resting and decided to get up for a minute to try and keep his leg from stiffening up too much.
He stretched his forepaws and arched his back, his leg complained but he ingored it. He couldn't go on being so weak, he had to be stronger for the team and for himself. There was enough of a gap in the canopy of leaves above to allow through slivers of starlight that illuminated the pool. Dunston slowly padded around the edge trying not to wake anyone up. When there was some distance between him and the group, an invisible weight lifted off his chest. He had felt so uncomfortable sleeping in a group, a problem he had underestimated. He laid down once again, gazing at the water and hoping the gentle ripples would help him fall asleep.

As Misty sat there in silence, loving the feeling of being alone, she saw shadows move quietly through the bush. Dropping down to the damp ground, she released her claws, watching and waiting, her eyes following every movement.
Seeing bushes move, then everything stop, she realised that whoever or whatever it was had layed down to rest. Pulling herself forward, trying to keep her breath even and not give her presence away, she was near at last.
Stopping, she wasn't sure whether to charge or move slyly around behind. Making up her mind without hesitating,a low growl left her throat and she charged the bush. Surprise made her clamp her muzzle shut with a snap, and she bought herself up short, for there lay Dunston groggy with sleep.
Giving a small laugh, Misty dropped to the ground "you know.. I was just about to have you for supper, a bit on the chewy side but still.."
Falling silent thelioness watched his face, he seemed worried or upset about something, and then there was the strange way he was lying awkardly.
Leaning in closer she softly spoke " Dunston, whats wrong, can I help you with anything, you've done so much for me already...let me help "

Liam layed down and felt exhaustion pull him into sleeping. His eyes closed slowly as he tried to stay awake, but was soon out like a light. He instantly found himself in the same place, only no one else was there. He knew this was a dream as none of his wounds were hurting. He then looked to see what looked like a cub, only made out of shadows. He tried to speak but knew it was useless. The shadow cub walked up to him and examined him for a bit. The cub made a noise, which he could understand and knew it was saying 'I know your pain. You were alone from the start...no family...and soon enough, you won't be with your newfound friends...You will never be alone again....That I promise...' in a young voice. He backed up a little, not trusting it, but the cub walked right into him and seemed to go into his body. What just happened? he thought before relaxing on the grass. This dream was...uneventful dispite the wierd cub.
How long he was asleep, he had no clue. He awoke peacefully and yawned a little. He saw everything was fine still. What did that cub mean by that? he asked in his mind before he heard the voice of the cub in the dream. This is what I mean. I am your new, eternal friend. All I require from you is just to live in your body. I won't do anything bad to it. the voice said in Liam's head. Ok, you lost me at the 'living in my body' but I guess it won't matter. But if you try anything I don't like or something that I don't give you permission to do, you're out. he responded in his thoughts. Understandable. It is not every day another being walks into your body. So, maybe we should think of another subject. it replied.
ooc:this is to clarify the 'darker entity' thing in my adolescent's history and in the previous posts.

As Misty dropped down beside Dunston, she stopped talking to him, realising he was fast asleep and couldn't answer her. Sighing softly, she leaned in closer and inspected his body, seeing if there were any bad wounds apparent to the eye.
Coming to his leg she saw a wound still shiny and fresh, that the moonlight seemed to shine down on and illuminate for her. She could see that it was uninfected, and no jagged edges were loose, maybe it needed another rinse to clean it some more. Pushing herself up quietly she moved back to the water and scooping more in an oversized leaf she carried it back and gently let it run down and over the wound. Misty knowing that was the best she could do for Dunston, moved back and away, giving him the room and peace that obviously he had come searching for.
Stretching her limbs gracefully as she stood Misty, didn't know what to do, she didn't feel tired, and wasn't about to go back where the others were all spread out sleeping.
Moving away she wandered around in the damp soil following the waterline, listening to the sounds that filled the night air. Breathing in, Misty wondered how everything could be so tranquil and calm, when just a few hours before they were all fighting for their lives, not knowing if they would survive, and be able to carry on their journey.
Stopping to look up at the moon, Misty turned and moved up onto some dry ground, lowering herself down she then curled up with her head on her paws, just staring out at the reflections on the water, letting her body relax.

Tefnut had been taking short napsduring the night. She was never completely asleep though it might have looked like that when one was looking at her. But no, she didn't dare to risk the life of the whole group by letting herself fall into a deep sleep.
And so, she now opened her eyes, staring at the trees momentarily before she lifted her head up from her paws. The liopardess seemed to have regained her energy completely.
Tef's ears twiched as she slowly let her gaze move over the clearing, taking in who was where and what they were doing. It was rather quiet, and if she hadn't known better she could've throught this was just a normal jungle.
The liopardess rose to her feet and pounced down from her stone, moving up to Misteeka who seemed to be awake. She stopped next to her friend. "We'll move out soon", Tef said after a moment of silence. "It won't be long until the sun rises... Though I doubt we'll be able to see it once we leave this clearing."
She sighed and turned to look at Liam. The cub seemed to be awake as well. Tef smiled faintly at the cub, then walked over to Santiago. She stopped next to him and tilted her head slightly, then she poked his side with her paw. "Time to leave." After simply saying this, the liopardess moved over to the small stream to have a drink while she waited for everyone to prepare for leaving.

Dunston broke from his sleep once again. Frustration began to churn in his gut, if he couldn't rest, he wouldn't be any use to the group. He stretched himself out and slowly padded over to the water's edge, taking in the tranquility of the moment. After fighting for his life it was nice to have this break and the serene view.
He lapped up some water suddenly realizing his wound had just been washed. He knew it was Misty and he spotted her lying next to the water and he smiled briefly. His smile faded when Tefnut talked to Misty and a sneaking suspicion grew in his gut that they would be on the move again. I guess that would be better than 'pretending' to sleep, he thought.
Silently, he padded over to Tefnut just to scope out the situation. "What's going on?" he whispered curiously.

Liam looked towards Tef and the others and could tell that they were to be on the move soon. He stood up and stretched, being sure not to re-open the wound he sustained. He then began to have thoughts as to what would become of the group if/when they got out. Would they stick together? Or would they go their seperate ways?

Hearing pawsteps in front of him Koji's eyes flew open startled. He had forgotten where he was and what was happening, for a moment they all looked like strangers to him.
Struggling to his feet while still partly alseep, he shook his head to try and clear his thoughts. Looking over to his right, he saw the red maned lion called Santiago, and Koji let a sigh of relief slip from his muzzle, he recognised him straight away.
Looking around he saw the others quietly tallking to each other, all were awake, he was the last to rise.
Giving himself a stretch, followed by a sharp scratch, he moved over beside Tefnut at the water, himself quenching his thirst.
Glancing sideways at her, Koji hesitantly began to speak.
" I don't mean to interupt or anything, but can I come with you all. I'll try to be braver than I was back there with those scorpions if anything else should happen, I just don't want to be left here all by myself.. I don't like being alone"

Tefnut lifted the gaze of her green eyes from the water when she heard someone approach her. She saw Dunston, and he was asking for an explanation of what was going on. The liopardess lifted herself from the crouched position over the water and streched her neck momentarily. "We're leaving", she said. "It's a miracle we got to stay on this clearing without being disturbed. I'm glad of this, but partly it's also making me uncomfortable..."
She glanced around the clearing before looking at Dunston again. She opened her mouth to speak, but was interrupted when the newest member of the group, Koji, spoke out. The liopardess turned to look at him, smiling faintly. "You can come with us if that is what you really wish", she said. "It might be safer to travel in a group than alone, though these creatures the jungle is keeping within itself seem to attack both the group and the loners..."
She shook her head, giving one last glance at the clearing before she crossed the stream. It wasn't too deep and the water barely reached her belly. "Follow me", she told the others as she glanced over her shoulder. She had now come across the stream. "And don't go wandering alone... Unless you want to get lost." With that the liopardess took her first step away from their short time sanctuary.

Misty lay there a while longer while the others gathered themselves together, she waited till she saw Tefnut push foward into the cool swirling water, then pushed herself up and stretched.
Moving over she stood behind Liam and Dunston, giving them encouraging words. Looking around she waited for Kojo then Santiago, making sure she was the last one to leave the banks.
Glancing back over her shoulder before she took the plunge into the water, it was almost with sadness that they were leaving,They had made a new friend with Abeni and now they were leaving her behind for good and moving into a new mysterious part of this jungle not knowing what it would bring.
Flicking her eyes over the area one last time, Misty turned and followed them across the stream, staying together really was their only way of surviving, no matter how strong they were individually, they had to stay in a group, they were much stronger that way.

As Liam followed Tef, he was able to swim across the stream. He may not have a voice, but that will not hinder him. You are certain you are able to help when you can't even speak? the same voice asked in his head, unintentionally taunting him.No, but then again, when am I ever certain? he asked in his mind. When he got to the other side of the stream, following Tef, he shook himself dry slowly so as not to get Tef wet again.
ooc: assuming the size of the stream was easy for a cub to swim in.

Koji was pleased when Tefnut said he could stay with them and become one of the group. Standing waiting his turn to cross, he looked over his shoulder at the big red maned lion, he wasn't too sure about him, but he presumed he must be capable and a friend of them all to be allowed to travel with them.
Stepping out into the water, Koji was glad it only rose as far as his underbelly, he wasn't that keen on water to begin with oh well it can be my monthly wash, grinning to himself.
Making it to the other side, he pushed himself out and onto the bank, giving himself a shake all over, Koji then moved to stand beside Liam and Dunston, for some reason these two made him feel not so alone.

For the first time in a long while, Dunston felt real fear. He was normally in some sort of control of what was going on around him, but this jungle made him feel completely helpless. At least he didn't have to go through it all alone. He let out a small sigh and padded through the stream, letting the cool waters wash out his wound one last time. Who knew when he would find an oppurtunity like this again.
Dunston finally emerged from the stream and joined up in the group. He noticed Koji and Liam standing next to him and he couldn't help but smile. Looks like all the males are starting to team up, he thought. The feeling of fear swept over him once again, as if something was watching them. He'd felt that presence from the moment he'd gotten into this cursed jungle and it's just gotten more threatening. He could only hope it was just a bad gut feeling following him.
He padded over to Misty for he knew he could trust her. "I don't know how to say this, and I don't want to alarm anyone but I know you're smart and strong." He paused as he cast a quick galnce behind him. "I think something has been following me ever since I got here and I don't know what to do. It's driving me insane and I'm afraid that if it is something bad I may have just unleashed it on all of you."

Misteeca had been standing on the other side of the stream, and for some reason felt compelled to look over her shoulder. She couldn't see anything as her eyes scanned over the area they had left behind, and she was just about to move forward, when she heard movement in front of her. Bringing her head around quickly she saw and heard Dunston standing before her.
"Dunston, I don't really know what to say to you..., except whatever is out here, its not your fault honestly. Ever since Tefnut and myself started on this journey, strange unexplained things have happened that have been out of our control. It's like this jungle holds all these evil forces and is working against us no matter which way we turn. I'm glad you are alert and watching out for us...but how about you go bit more easy on yourself.. I know you would never do any of us harm, and I'm getting quite used to having you around with us"
Moving forward she rubbed her cheek against Dunstons softly " Come on lets go see what Tefnut wants us to do, and stop worrying ok....if there's anything just come and tell me,a nd we'll work on it all together"

Tefnut walked forward, her ears perked up and claws ready to bextented if she caught the sound of possible danger. It seemed to be too quiet, at least when considering what the group had went throug the previous day. The jungle just didn't seem to have anything dangerous to put on their path right now, which was exactly why Tef was feeling so nervous. She glanced over her shoulder, and was relieved to see everyone was still following her.
This was the small yet huge mistake she made, for as soon as she had turned to look backwards she felt the ground give away under her paws. Letting out a surprised yelp the liopardess fell down, right through the ground. The image of spider caves flashed in her mind, and she fezred this would be something similar...
She slid down the dark tunnel and - to her great surprise - ended up laying on a cliff. The ground there was covered with short, greenish-brown grass. She stood up, shaking her head to get rid of the momentary dizzyness...
And as she looked up she gasped, her mouth wide open. She glanced around, looking for a way to get back to her friends, but she found none. She couldn't even see them from here. She went to the tunnel, realizing she wouldn't be able to climb back up.
So, she toook a deep breath and shouted to the tunnel. "GUYS! I'M ALL RIGHT!" Tef glanced over her shoulder. "YOU GOT TO SEE THIS, THE TUNNEL IS SAFE TO SLIDE DOWN!" And so she turned around and stepped aside from the tunnel, just in case if someone else decided to jump down. And as she did this she turned to look at what had caused her surprised gasp a moment ago.
In front of her opened a huge maze. It was a labyrinth, with walls made of both plants and stone. It was so wide that she couldn't see the other side. But she could see the path leading down to it from the cliff where she was standing now. It seemed that entering the labyrinth was the only way to get away from the cliff. 'I don't like this' she thought. 'I don't like this at all...'

"Define safe!" Santiago joked as he walked towards the tunnel and looked down into the darkness beyond it. He raised an eyebrow at Tefnut's comment because usually tunnels were filled with all sorts of unforeseeable danger...or at least that's what has happened in his experience. He also wasn't sure if he should trust Tefnut or the rest of the group just yet, but seeing as his trust issues caused strife within the group he decided to take a leap of faith.
And then he had a flashback to events from four months ago...
"Where are we going?" Santiago asked as he followed Malawi. He had known the lioness for about two months and was currently living with her pride as her father had given him permission to stay. Despite his past, Santiago was giving some serious thought into staying. Truth be told he and Malawi seemed to be getting close. Then again, most of the lionesses in the pride had a feeling that Malawi liked him and, judging by how they studied him, he had a feeling that they knew he had a crush on her.
"Calm down, Santiago, it's a surprise," Malawi commented as she led the way through the rainforest-like terrain before walking up to a small tunnel hidden between some rather large boulders. She knew about Santiago's adventurous streak and knew that he might be strong enough to move the boulder so the two could explore the cave. It was only natural that she'd have Santiago tag along.
"You know I hate surprises," Santiago teased as he looked at the boulders and then at the tunnel hidden between them.
"It's a surprise to me too, I wanna get in here, but the boulders are blocking the way..."
"And you need me to move them," Santiago interrupted as Malawi nodded with a grin. Santiago walked up to one of the boulders before focusing all of his strength on moving the boulder. He then pushed up against it and switched positions at least five times until the boulder had moved enough for the two to slip between them.
Malawi took lead once more before walking between the rocks and deeper into the tunnel, leaving Santiago behind by mistake.
"Hey, wait for me!" Santiago called out before a blood-curdling scream came from within the tunnel. Santiago bolted inside only to find that Malawi had tripped on a root and fallen onto loose soil that gave away and led to the lioness' death from the fifty foot drop.
Santiago sighed. Yep, tunnels are bad news...

Liam hesitated about going down after Tef called out and after he had, but decided to do so. He hesitantly moved to the natural slide and made himself slide down. As he saw the slope decline, he used his paws and claws to slow down, but when he stopped, he fell to his side. Very embarrassing, yet he got up and looked around. He saw Tef and walked to her, only to see the labrynth. "A.....az....ng." he managed to speak, meaning to say 'Amazing'.

Misty stood there her mouth wide open in shock and surprise, about to move closer, she dug her claws hard into the ground so she couldn't slip when Tefnuts words came floating up from the hole ' You gotta see this'.
Turning to the others Misty looked at them all, "If Tef says it's safe it will ok, we know we can trust her and we are all in this together, so let's go I guess"
Watching as Liam took the first brave step and then he disapeared. Misty walked over to Koji and gave him a nudge "your turn now, off you go".
Waiting, she saw him hesitate, so she decided to make the move for him, and raised a paw and gave him a decent push that sent him down following after Liam.
Now there was only Santiago, herself and Dunston left. Glancing up at the red maned lion, she saw different emotions flit across his face, painful ones by the looks. Misty needed him to go next, she wanted to keep Dunston in front of her 'to look after him', and she was going to be last, just to make sure. Tefnut led and she was the back up.
Walking over to Santiago, she stepped in close "are you alright ? Tefnut and kojo are down there waiting, we need you with us....please"

Dunston waited for Santiago to slide down the tunnel and he soon made his own descent, digging in his claws so he wouldn't tumble all the way down. I may be wounded, he thought, but I can still take care of myself. He reached the bottom and he felt his jaw drop. Ahead of him lied a vast maze and a feeling of being trapped.
"This doesn't make any sense!" he couldn't help blurt out. "I mean, what is the point of some random maze in the middle of a jungle! This isn't physically possible!" Dunston took a moment to calm down and think it through. "Someone definitely built this, maybe as some kind of ritual area or proving ground. If so, this maze could be very dangerous, but if its creators are still here, they may know a way out of this jungle or at least past this maze." Dunton was unaware that he had thought all of that out loud and he was slightly embarressed that he had rambled on so randomly.

Misty took a breath and looked over her shoulder again, she seemed to be doing alot of that lately, not seeing anything unusual, she let herself move forward and her front paws slide over the edge followed by her body.
Praying quickly to herself that all would ok and this wouldn't be their final resting place, Misty's body shuddered to a stop accidentially bumping into Santiago and Dunston, at least part of her had a soft landing.
"I'm sorry, are you both ok....." trailing off quickly she looked around her taking in the situation they all found them selves in now.
"TEFNUT, LIAM...where are you ?"

Tefnut looked over her shoulder as Liam came. She smiled at the cub before turning to look at the laburinth again. "Amazing indeed..." Her thoughts were soon interrupted as she heard Dunston come. She nodded in agreement at what the lion said. "True, it doesn't make sense..." she said, narrowing her eyes at the labyrinth. "Then again, nothing in this jungle has made sense. I just hope this isn't some trick this jungle sent on us."
The liopardess' ears twiched as she heard Misteeca call her and Liam. She glanced over her shoulder. "Here, Misty", she replied. Then Tef stood up from the sitting position she had taken while waiting for the others. She turned around to face them. "Now... I don't like that maze, but there was no way I could've come up either. My guess is that the jungle has somehow been chasing us this way all the time." She turned to face the maze. "When we go in there... I don't know what happens. But I will not leave anyone in trouble." She took a calming breath, closing her eyes momentarily. "Ready to go...?" she asked, her voice slightly more quiet than normally.

Misteeca breathed a sigh of relief when Tef, Liam and Kojo moved out of their dark hiding place and towards herself, Dunston and Santiago... they were now all together ready for whatever was going to come their way, in this maze.
Her ears raised slightly listening to Dunston speak his thoughts outloud, she was sure all of them had those sorts of messages running through their own minds, one could not really, with all that had happened to them so far.
"It's fine Dunston, we all know how you feel, but as Tef says...we all stick together...ok, we know we have a greater chance when we work together as a team, we proved that with those scorpions."
Misty looked around at each of their faces " and remember, not only Tefnut but myself as well, WE WILL NOT leave ANYONE alone or behind."
Misty turned back to where there was only one option to go..forward.. "OK, I guess this is it, its now or never, Tef will lead the way and I will come up at the rear, and lets all try and stick as close together as possible."

Santiago looked around the tunnel, an unsure expression on his face. The fact that a large group was inside did nothing to help seeing as if one steps on a loose area, they're all going down. His eyes seemed to convey the fact that the scene of him charging into the tunnel before looking around and seeing Malawi at the bottom of the fifty foot tunnel. It was like a nightmare.
Except that it was all too real.
He mostly kept to himself as he walked, only nodding his head to agree with Misty, Tefnut, and any of the other group members who seemed to ask a question or make a statement.
The entire time he just stared ahead like a ghost had caught his attention. His expression switching from that of an unsure one was replaced by an upset expression as he finally looked around. In all honesty, a ghost had caught his attention.
It was Malawi's.
Guilt ran over him as the apparition seemed to be asking "why" and nothing else. "Why didn't you stop me?" "Why didn't you follow me?" "Why didn't you go first?"
...why didn't he go first? Why didn't he do any of this? If he had maybe she would still be alive. Maybe he wouldn't have left. In the end he just kept mentally scolding himself for what had happened. Unfortunately for him, others could read him easily as he could never keep a straight face, his expression changing with his emotions.

Koji stood there still close to Liam and Dunston not uttering a word. He knew it was so much safer to be with them all , but looking around him made him doubt his decision slightly. He wasn't the bravest lion, but he knew he had nowhere else to go.
Taking a breath, he looked at the other two beside him, they didn't look like they were panicking, so he had to calm himself down.
"Umm I guess I'm ready to go if you are"
Looking at Dunston and Liam with a frown " its ok if I stay with you two isn't it ?"

Liam listened intently to everyone's words. His voice was still captive, but at least he had been able to get part of that ability back. He heard Koji speak and looked at him. "Of...course......it..is.." he said, having difficulty even saying the words. His speech was fragmented, yet the cub would not allow it to interfere. The young cub walked next to Koji and gave him a friendly nudge, as if saying 'I got your back on this'.
ooc: I got lazy again, so I decided not to typed the fragmented speech constantly.

Misty paused after talking to them, looking ahead she saw that Tef had taken a few steps already, "ok shes moving, lets keep up."
Standing there she watched as Koji and Liam moved into position right behind Tef. Turning she saw Santiago standing there, he didn't seem to be quite 'with it'. Hesitating, as she wasn't sure what sort of reception she would get from him, as he had been keeping to himself after his and tefs little squabble.
Moving closer to the red maned lion, Misty lowered her lashes a little " Are you alright to be down here with us, its a bit late to change your mind, you can't exactly turn around and go back....but just stay close.. if there is anything...umm you know... bothering you, maybe just stick close to one of us.. Or if you want go up and be beside Tef"
Stepping back, she gave him one more glance "If you are ready so am I !"

Santiago snapped back to the real world and looked over to Misty.
"Oh, yeah, no, I should be good. Just be careful, tunnels and I usually don't mix that well," Santiago replied, it would be obvious to anybody who knew about his past that he was still blaming himself. He had been blaming himself ever since the tragedy happened.
Santiago, for goodness sakes, stop blaming yourself. Maybe it couldn't have been avoided, Santiago thought as he continued walking.
"Okay, I kinda' sugarcoated that one, somebody close to me died in a tunnel very similar to this one. It just seems to be bringing back the nightmare," Santiago said quietly as he continued walking. He didn't realize how good it felt to talk about what had happened and get it off of his chest until he did.
