Name: Balam
Species: Jaguar
Age: Adolescent
Gender: Male
Description:
Like any non-melanistic jaguar, Balam has a yellow pelt with white underfur, and several jaguar spots. His eyes are bright blue. He can usually be seen wearing a backpack where he carries his gadgets around, and he even learned to wear a digital watch for his convenience.
Special abilities/powers
Balam doesn't have any special power himself, but his passion for old human technology and electronic devices makes him useful in various situations that require one or more of his gadgets. These include thermal imaging goggles, binoculars, a compass, handheld transceivers, among other things. He also learned to tie different types of knots, and knows a bit of motorized vehicles (Although just in theory, he has never mastered them).
Behaviour:
Since he started wearing human clothes when he was very young, he started developing a big interest in the humans of old, especially with their technology and devices left in the world. He’s very enthusiastic about it, and he believes that if he could understand their function and use, it would benefit them and the lions greatly adapting them to their needs. However, his inability to read human text represents a great obstacle for his goal, which often frustrates him. All he has learned about how to use his devices has been through observation, either looking at pictures or old video feed of humans using them.
Even though he had discovered electronic devices still working in the world, he still can’t understand where does the electricity come from, but he understood that it is limited, and often he is seen collecting different kinds of batteries to keep his devices working. So far, his biggest accomplishment has been repairing a refrigerator, which has been proven helpful in storing the food they hunt.
History:
In post-apocalyptic Europe, jaguars were extremely low in numbers, only a few descendants from the ones that had been captive in old zoos and wildlife preserve parks, and even then, their struggles for survival had been mostly unsuccessful. Some jaguars had no other option but to adapt to the ways of lions and live in prides where they could be accepted. Such was the case of Balam and his mother, Yatziri.
They both had been accepted in a pride of lions that lived in what long ago was Barcelona, staying with them in a gigantic landmark temple (La Sagrada Familia) as their new home. There had been rivalry over the prides in Barcelona, and often it was dangerous to wander the streets alone. Yatziri had become useful for the lions in war because she was a full melanistic jaguar, and her black pelt could blend very well with the night. Her son, however, represented a problem with his spotted jaguar pelt, which stood out greatly, so she forced him to constantly cover it with dirt and mud, which he hated. Later, he found out that wearing human clothing was much more comfortable for him when the need for camouflage called for it, and wearing it constantly made him start showing an interest for manmade stuff. He was very curious about devices humans had used when they lived there, especially electronic ones. The lions he lived with frowned at his new obsession, calling it “weird” and “useless”, and his mother was no different. But he gained some attention when he repaired and learned to use an old and big refrigerator, which he found useful for storing and conserving the food the lions had killed. But Yatziri wasn’t convinced with this, and when Balam had set his new goal as understanding how motorized vehicles worked, that’s when she decided to interfere. She had just found him looking curiously into the engine of a small car.
“Look at yourself, Balam!” she said. “Instead of being useful in the pride and learn to hunt with the lions, you’re wasting your time with this human trash. You’re starting to look just like them… you’re even wearing their skin!”
“It’s not skin, mom!” Balam replied. “They made it themselves. And I’m not wasting my time! I think this could be really useful for everyone. I mean, look at all that they have achieved!”
“And what exactly have they achieved?” him mother asked sarcastically.
Balam thought for a moment. “Look...” he pulled in a small box with a set of hunting knives. “Humans didn’t have claws like us, so what did they do? ... They built their own. They couldn’t run as fast as we do, so they built this machine to move faster and travel long distances in shorter time… They didn’t have wings like the birds either, so they...”
“Oh, great!” Yatziri interrupted. “You want to fly too?”
“No! It’s not that! I just... I just think that if we learn to use all these objects they left behind, we’ll benefit greatly from them. Then we’ll understand how they work and we could start building our own. Just think of the possibilities… we can make devices especially for us to use. If we continue from where they left off...”
Yatziri interrupted him by dragging a human skeleton from inside the car and dropping it in front of Balam. “This is how they ended like” she pointed out, and then her eyes pierced into Balam’s with a stare. “For a long time they locked our kind in cages for them to look at us, defenseless and humiliated for generations. Then they were all killed by things they built themselves, and left us struggling for survival in a world ruined by their stupidity... we are jaguars, and we will not follow the footsteps that led to their demise. I’m not grateful with them at all, and so you shouldn’t.”
Yatziri turned around and walked away, leaving him speechless. Balam didn’t want to admit it, but even though he wanted hard to defend his position, he felt uneasy about his obsession with human technology now. Her mother’s words had struck him very hard, and all his efforts seemed meaningless for the few days that followed. But he didn’t know that soon his abilities would be noticed by someone, and he would soon play a big role in a mission of vital importance for the future of life on Earth.
