Name: Awiti
Age: Cub
Species: Lion
Gender: Female
Appearance: Awiti is quite small for her age and always has been. She is thin, with a perpetually hungry belly. Her scraggly tawny colored fur is matted from lack of care and her sharp amber eyes are quickly tired. She also has three short scars that run across the upper part of her right hind leg which twists out sharply from a poorly mended past injury causing her to walk with a limp.
Diet: Beetles, mice, birds, eggs, anything small that she can get a hold of really.
Personality: Awiti is a shy quiet cub who is wary of others and easily frightened. She feels unloved and unwanted, male lions and water buffalo can unnerve her without much or any provocation.
Background: Awiti was the final cub born to her mother in a litter of six. Shortly after her eyes and ears first opened she and her litter mates were trampled by a territorial water buffalo eager to secure his own harem of females before the start of breeding season and establish his own territory. This attack resulted in the deaths of four of her siblings leaving she and one of her older brothers Farai alone and Awiti's leg severely mangled.
After they grew old enough their mother Enu introduced them to the pride where they grew happily with their aunts Nididi, Folami, Bapoto, Imani, Nia and Rudo. Through their father Duna and the pair had many, many half siblings/cousins to play with, giving them endless sources of entertainment and friendship. Awiti grew up stalking, awkwardly due to her leg, through the long grass, chasing butterflies and beetles while gnawing any tail that moved.
She was raised with the belief that the sun is the leader of The Pride of Souls, the moon is his chief wife, and that all animals are their children and there for are siblings. When an animal is killed for food a moment must be taken to pray for their spirit to be transformed into a new star before they can eat. When a member of the pride dies a month of ritualistic mourning ensues, save for a still born cub which are the only ones to be buried, mourning for these lost souls is carried out only by those who wish to where they separate themselves from the pride and mourn every night until their grief passes.
While Awiti was still very young a troupe of roving bachelors overthrew and killed her father. The most dominate of them was named Gazini and he claimed the females for himself. As in most take overs the cubs of the previous leader were cast out or killed. This coupé was viciously carried out ending in many innocent lives lost. Awiti and her dark furred brother Farai tried their best to stay together after this, depending on each other for strength and security, but while she was handicapped by her leg he was freshly blinded in one eye. One morning however Awiti awoke cold and alone. She prays that she will find her brother again and that he is well but can't help feeling that all hope is lost as she struggles to find a way to survive.
