The Sound of Boredom

Zulu was bored to tears. His best friends Akello and Kya were nowhere to be found. He wasn't hungry or tired. He had just run out of things to stick his nose into. Soaking up the sun seemed to be the only thing to do. He lay in the matted down grass he had been rolling in for some time. He thought about his sad past; his brother dying, his father chasing him from everyone he loved. He loved to be alone and free, but sometimes he missed the old days. In fact, sometimes he felt his brother Talli's presence around him, lingering and watching him, sometimes protecting him. He noticed that the clouds were similar to the ones the day Talli died. He seemed to remember everything about that day for some reason, and it was the one thing in his life he wanted to forget.

He rambled about in his mind for hours on end just waiting for something interesting to happen. Maybe he could pick on that baboon he had found that morning. Or go for a swim in the watering hole. He decided that he wouldn't find anything to do if he kept laying around. He started skipping about humming a little tune to himself. It was one he had heard when he passed a tribe of humans one day. It just stuck in his head and relieved him of his bordom for once.

He heard something double in the music he sang. He scratched his ear, thinking it was ringing or something, but then he realized that someone was humming along with him. But who else would know such a song? He looked about to see who was joining in his musical number.

Jali padded slowly through the tall grass. The young adolescent wasn't quite sure where on earth he was. His fur glistened in the sun that was shining down on him from a gap in the trees.

He then heard footsteps near him, and the sound of someone starting to hum a song. It was the same song he had heard the humans singing when he was released from the only place he knew back then. It was some type of centre that they had built in the middle of Africa. It was were animals were taken in and looked after if they were injured, which him and his family were at the time.

There had been no other cheetah's in there though.. just a few lion cubs. Jali had become friends with the only girl there, although he couldn't quite remember her name.."

All of a sudden the young cheetah adolescent started humming along with the song, while taking a few steps forward, his body low in the grass and his head almost sticking out where the grass ended, and it became dirt. You could see his mauve eyes flashing about, staring at the lion infront of him .

Zulu noticed that the humming was quickly getting louder, and whoever was humming was approaching and getting closer. He stopped humming in an attempt to locate the voice. He turned to his right, where the singing seemed to originate. There in the tall grass, he saw two bright purple eyes partially hidden in the grass, watching him intently. The other voice stopped its singing, and Zulu looked into the eyes, wondering if he should approach, or wait for them to come to him.

((OOC: well, since this is a practice thread, I could give ^some feed back. =P You're doing great, Zulu. ^^ One thing though is that when you're role playing the character, you should avoid using smileys.

Jalis' mauve eyes were fixed on the lion. The lion was also fixed on him. Well now the lion knew he was there, he hopefully wouldn't be attacked. So with that the cheetah adolescent stepped out from the bush and stood before the lion.

"Howdy'.." He said with a weak smile.

((Duh stupid me, I knew what mauve was but I had a brain fart . lol. Oh and also just to let you know my character's a cheetah too. Srry if I didn't make that clear.))

Zulu was delighted to see that it was another cheetah. It wasn't like him, but them again what cheetahs were like him besides is family? He'd never seen another cheetah with his marbled spots, and it disappointed him a bit. The cheetah shyly greeted him.

"Hey, there," he said politely. "Were you the one singing that song?"

Jali let out a sigh of relief when the cheetah greeted him. He bowed his head in a returned greeting. "Uh, yes.. that was me. The name is Jali, by the way." A smile was now placed upon the cheetah's muzzle. "You are?"

Zulu tried to keep very friendly, seeing that Jali was a bit timid. "I'm Zulu," he said with a grin. Just strollin' around a bit. Not much else to do." But the attempt to be cheerful and casual would have to wait. One question was piercing his mind. He took a quick glance in both directions, and turned towards Jali. "Where on earth did you hear that song?" he said curiously.

The cheetah grinned. "That song.. the humans used to sing at the centre i was held in when i was a wee cub." Jali's eyes turned a darker shade of mauve thinking about his past. He wasn't going to explain fully to Zulu unless he asked.

"What about you??" Zulu must have been around humans sometime in his life to know about the song. And he certaintly wasn't in the centre when Jali was there.

"Well, when I was younger...I was alone for the first time, and I wasn't used to it," he said with a shrug as he glanced down at the ground. He decided not to go into detail. Maybe if Jali knew about his reputation when he was a cub, he would think badly of him. "I used to follow around a tribe of traveling humans. At a distance, I mean. They would sing it all the time. But I decided not to risk anything and stopped following them. They looked at me funny a couple times." A flood of memories came back to him. Zulu looked down at the scar on the top of his paw. Humans hadn't crossed his mind for a while.

He blinked hard and shook it off. "So you said something about a center? You mean you lived with humans?" he said intreguingly.

Jali nodded his head through Zulu's explaining. "I see..." Jali understood what the other cheetah had done as a cub, he probably would have done the same thing if he didn't live in that centre and hadn't seen humans before. Then Zulu mentioned something about his centre.

"Yes... it was like a rescue centre or something..." He started explaining. "My family and I were trapped in a fire, and the humans came along and rescued us, took us back to this 'centre' and treated us.." The cheetah adolescent looked down at his smooth fur. He didn't have any signs of the burns left now, as his fur had all grown back. "There were a few other animals there from the fire aswell..."

[Tamber]

"Wow," Zulu replied to the story. Zulu flopped down on the ground and rested his head on his paws. He grinned and gave Jali an interested look. "So what was it like, being around humans all the time and all? It must have been very different from living on your own out here."

Nadayshana had wondered off from her mother and came across to cheetahs. "Wo!" she said surprised and not realising there were any of those. " Achoo!" She sneezed. " Uh-oh please tell me they wont hurt me......" Nadayshana slowly crept down in the tall grass. The only thing that you could see were her ears. They twitched back and forth. "Uh. I hate my ears." she said while trying to hide them. But when she did that you could see her paws hiding them. " How does mother hunt? Shes good at keeping her ears down." Nadayshana rolled on her side. When she did that she realised that she hadnt slept in a while. She yawned. When she did, her little lioness roar came out. "Uh-Oh!"

Zulu heard a squeky sneeze from not too far off. Before Jali could answer his question, he turned his head towards the tiny sneeze. Looking about, he said to Jali, "Did you hear that?" He saw what looked like two little ears poking up from the grass. Then came a little yawn, from some kind of cub, he thought.

Jali was just about to answer when a noise caught his attention. It obiously caught Zulu's attention aswell. "Did i ever.." He replied staring in the direction of the noise. It was a bit hard NOT to hear it. He saw some little ears and figured it was a cub. The cheetah slowly padded over to the cub and bent over, smiling at it. "Hello there..."

"AH!" Nadayshana shook. Then she realised that he looked harmles. "H..Hi.." Nadayshana said shaking but wanting to sound strong. " Im Nadayshana. But people call me Shana for short." Shana said Sitting and looking strong and old. Nadayshana stood up. " What are you?" Nadayshana said. She was only about 11 months old and she forget very fast. "I have seen things like you but, i never knew what they were. My moms friends with one of them. "
Shana nodded.

As Jali walked over and got the cub's attention, Zulu hesitated, but then walked over. He saw the small lioness and smiled. Unable to catch her name, he heard her ask Jali what they were. He waited for Jali to answer her question, since it was him she was asking.

[Sarafina]

Shana saw the other one. " YOu look the same. Yet.... different." she said looking confused and wanting to kno what they are. " Those are cool. " Nadayshana walked over to Jali and poked one. " It just stays there." she giggled and poked it one more time.

Jali chuckled slightly at Shana. "We are Cheetahs." He replied simply. "And we look different because we are different types of cheetahs." He then added on with a smile. "Oh.. and this is Zulu..."

[Tamber]

Shana pointed out that he and Jali looked different. Jali intrduced him and explained that they were separate types. "Yeah. Well, they call my kind king cheetahs. Why I don't know. My fur is shaggier and has different spotting, but I'm still the same as Jali, here. So, what are you doing all alone? Don't you have a pride somewhere?"

[Sarafina]

Shana looked sad. "Well i kinda got lost from my mother. I was trying to find help.... but you guys looked different and i got scared." Nadayshana sat down and her head hung. "My pride moves alot so they could be anywhere!" Shana got more sad.

Jalis ears flattened at what the little golden cub was saying. "Well.... we don't have anything better to do..." The cheetah looked at Zulu. "We could help you find her if you like?"

[Sarafina]

Nadayshana ran up yo her and nuzzled the bottom of her chest. "Thank you soo much" She said with a big smile on her face.

Sereana had been sleeping for about an hour. When she aoke she couldnt fid Nadayshana. "Shana???" She got up and started lookin. Nothing.

As Shana pressed against Jali in his act of kindness, Zulu smiled. He then started pondering whre they should go. "Shana, do you have any idea which direction your pride might be in?"

[Sarafina]

" I came from that way" she said pointing behind her. "I just want my mother" she said siting down with her head hanging. "What was that?" she looking behind her. She heard some kind of roar. She roared but it wasnt loud enough.

Sereana was starting to cry a little. I cant loose her she thought. Nadyshana was all she had left. "Shana!" she screamed maybe she could hear her. "Nadayshana!! answer me.." she said while she layed downa dn gve up.

Shana looked at Jali and Zulu. "Can one of you roar for me??" she sked with her eyes big and a little smileon her face.
