Kumai stood up and stretched languidly as the dawn breached the horizon. He slowly blinked as the first rays of the sun reached his form. He looked down at the slumbering form of his brother beside him. Songa was still deep in his dreams and Kumai chuckled quietly as his brother shivered slightly in his sleep. It had been a cold night, and the humidity on the breeze hinted at rain.
The brothers were trying to reach the ocean. It was something they had always wanted to do and thus they had been traveling for many weeks hoping to see the massive expanse of water. The water was supposedly salty and the mountains were said to crumble to minuscule pebbles beneath one's paws. The sun was now fully above the horizon and Kumai felt fully alert. The breeze caressed his golden mane once more and his gleaming locks tumbled back as he sighed contentedly and lifted his face to the wind. In a heartbeat his eyes flicked open and his ears were pulled forward. He had caught a scent on the breeze. It smelled like a lion but he couldn't be sure. Kumai's eyes narrowed in caution and he nudged Songa with his paw. "Songa! Songa wake up." he rumbled anxiously. Songa simply rolled on his opposite side away from the mid-morning sun. "Songa. Wake. Up." Kumai growled again and gave his brother a shove. Songa whipped around and growled at Kumai. "What do you have against the concept of a good nights sleep?!" Songa snarled. Kumai simply lifted his head to the wind and inhaled. Songa's eyes widened and then he stood up, although rather stiffly. Kumai watched warily as Songa scanned the sparse grasslands around them. "Kumai." he sighed. "I don't see anything. Why did you get me up? Theres nothing...wait...I think...I think I hear something...." Songa drifted off as his ears flicked forward. Kumai knew his brother well. Songa wasn't nicknamed Eagleeye for nothing, but not many others knew that his hearing was almost as good as his eyesight. Songa's eyes narrowed and Kumai watched as his brother twitched his tail slowly...back and forth...in his concentration.
