Name: Jelani
Species: Nubian ibex
Sex/Gender: Male
Age: Young adult (mid-20s in human years)
Appearance: Jelani looks like a typical ibex, with a creamy white underside and sandy brown uppers. He is marked with a deep, blackish brown on the following places: nose and lips, in the ears, from the fronts of the shoulders in a stripe down each front leg, at his ankles, in a ring above each hoof, covering the tail, and in a subtle ridge down the center of the back. He also has a beard of the same color. Though he has a relatively thin build - not being old enough or high enough in status to build substantial muscle - he has long, curved horns that may precede him as a candidate for future herd-leader. With every day he spends navigating the cliffs of his home and fending for the territory, his shoulders and neck muscles grow more powerful and impressive.
Blended and faded on the backs of Jelani and his herd-mates, one can see a faint purple dye rubbed into their hair. This is a distinguishing mark, applied by rolling on purplish berries and staining themselves in the process. Info on Jelani's herd can be found in "Background" below.
Background: Jelani lives in and around a forest located in a long, deep valley, carved partially by a mountain on one side and partially by a river following along the bottom of the valley. The river has gradually been carving deeper, forming a shallow canyon. The valley is shrouded in forest, with a canopy catching every bit of the little sunlight that reaches the area each day.
The ibex herd meanders about the steeper parts of this area, along the lower parts of the mountain and on the cliffs of the canyon. Jelani's herd in particular has taken it upon themselves to watch over a population of giant eland that inhabit the forest. Long ago, the eland were plentiful and garnered much respect from the fauna of the region. When the climate changed, they moved into the forest seeking shelter, and a pact was made with the predators of the area that only sick or injured elands would be fair game for hunting. Recently, some predators have overstepped their bounds and taken advantage of the concentrated eland population, rapidly depleting it. The elands and other inhabitants of the forest are beginning to become defensive, and tensions are running high.
Jelani's family guards the elands from encroaching predators, due to their ability to climb the cliffs and reach good scouting perspectives.
Personality: Jelani is a bit high-strung, taking his job quite seriously. His role as a forest guard serves as a means by which he can strengthen and train in order to earn a higher status in his herd. Accordingly, upon first meeting he behaves much like his kin, defending the boundaries of the forest stubbornly. Still, Jelani is not entirely compelled by his job for its own sake; he questions the rising tensions between the local herbivores and predators, having seen the way the forest's spirits have reacted to the upheaval. Though he is quick and strong, he is far more likely to intimidate than to actually attack, preferring to chase away fanatics rather than provoke them needlessly. Jelani can play a good bluff game, and as such he can spot a bluff a mile away.
