Prologue:
Across the great jungles, grasslands, and deserts of Africa, there lives a legendary pride of magical cats; the Pride Premier. This pride rules over a massive expanse of territory, and their members enjoy lavish lifestyles filled with bountiful food, lush gardens, and unending pleasure. But this kingdom of heaven is built upon the backs of slaves; smaller prides that the powerful Pride Premier has enslaved by murdering their Kings, Queens, sons, and daughters. Even the birds of the air are slaves to these god-like cats. For members of the Pride Premier all possess some unique power or ability. Cats that can fly, turn invisible, rain fire, turn into smoke, their powers are unaccountable. And they know it. Slaves are forced to starve as they serve their masters food, do their bidding, kill each other, and any slave among these slave prides who develops powers is immediately disposed of.

But now slaves are disappearing, and an unnatural drought has struck the land. Food is becoming scarce, and the slave prides have never known such suffering as they try desperately to provide for the monster at their backs. Members of the Pride Premier are being murdered in the night, and put on display for the slaves to see, and in the heat of the drought the flame of revolt is spreading. Spies from the slave flock are failing to return from their missions, and slaves seem to turn on their masters. The Emperor Exalted, the sovereign of the Pride Premier, has not been see in two months and is only a wisp of his former self. Corruption is rampant in the elite of the pride and every cat can sense the tension in the air. Insurgency is brewing, but civil war is on the horizon.

Will the Pride Premier survive?
Book One: The Destitute
A centurion of the Jocasta slave pride discovers three cubs from the Jocasta slave pride with powers while heading towards a military outpost by the Black Cliffs. The centurion, Nyx, kills all three cubs and then tries to do battle with their mother Lietai, who kills him with her superscream power. Two days later news of the murder reaches Princess Eliora, the Commander of Flocks of the Pride Premier Empire. Deeply unsettled, she sends her best spymasters and spies to search for Lietai and then goes to tell her brother Prince Roque about Nyx's death. Roque is infuriated by this act of rebellion and goes to Elmas to seek their father, the Emperor Exalted's counsel, and plans to discuss disciplinary action with their brother, Prince Messala, the next day. Eliora then flies to the Jocasta slave pride territory during the night to meet with her spies and spymasters and search for Lietai.
Meanwhile Ruby, a praetor on Mt. Rukor, conducts a small investigation with Pythes and Leukos, some Pride Premier cubs who might be developing powers. The cubs stay overnight with Ruby who grows curious as she watches Eliora and Roque meet in the night sky. She drifts off to sleep but suffers from nightmares of her lost cub Iris during the night.
Mwezi, a lesser spymaster of the Pride Premier, watches an area near the place where Nyx was murdered as part of the group of spies and spymasters sent to the Jocasta slave pride to investigate the murder by Princess Eliora. Her slave owl, N'oo, reports back to her after ordering the rest of Mwezi's slave flock to circle around the area again. They discuss N'oo's upcoming retirement due to the hatching of he and his mate Inat's owlets, and then watch the area together in silence. In the Haides slave pride, Lumiar worries over the death of the centurion from the Jocasta slave pride and what it will mean for the rest of the slaves. The healer from the pride and a member of Lumiar's old pride, Idela, comes out to reassure Lumiar and urges her to rest for tomorrow's hunt. The old lioness and Lumiar then go inside the slave pride den and Lumiar tries to get some sleep.
In the Vartan slave pride, a strange foreign lion by the name of Leto is forced to fight in the Arena by members of the Pride Premier. Leto, a Caitiff Scarred and a terminal slave, is an extraordinarily adept warrior who has somehow managed to survive each of his battles in the Arena. He manages to outwit his opponent and subsequently defeats a Pride Premier soldier. After the fight an exhausted Leto is returned to the holding caves of the terminal slaves, an area where they are purposefully kept in isolation.
Back on Mt. Haides, a young lion, Maji, is tortured by the spymasters in The Roost; a series of large caves on Mt. Haides used by the spies and spymasters of the Pride Premier. Icilia and Herius, two greater spymasters, are the primary torturers. Icilia is suspicious of Maji since he was caught in the North Savannah, and she believes he might have information on Lietai and other potential rebels. Maji is petrified and cries that he does not know anything about Lietai or any other rebels. He prays for something to save him.
During this time Kaimu (a hyena) and Kulaani (a lion) wander into the Pride Premier's territory, near the Southeastern border. The pair are stopped by a group of Pride Premier warriors and are brought in for questioning to a nearby military outpost.
A consul named Nafsi fondly reflects on his violation of a Pride Premier lioness as he relaxes in his cave. He remembers how he had had his way with the lioness, forcing himself upon her, and then been interrupted by the domestic slave Na'hina. Furious, he had attacked the slave and destroyed her eyes. He had restrained himself only at the reminder of her usefulness. He had threatened her with death if she ever spoke of what he had done, and then tied a bit of cloth over her eyes. Nafsi's reflection ends as he orders Na'hina to prepare him his dinner.
Roque flies to Elmas, enraged in his fire form. He manages to calm himself down before entering Elmas but then his sister, Anima appears before him. At first he is cautious of her, she seems angry with him. Then, she surprises him by submitting to his right to rule. She tells him that he must speak with Messala, and then flies away. Roque is shocked, but pleased, and he then goes into Elmas to speak with his father, even though his father has not spoken to anyone in weeks. He desperately asks what should be done about the murders and then is stunned when his father not only speaks to him, but appears before him. His father tells him that he must kill the slave prides cubs in order to crush any rebellious thoughts the slaves might have. His father disappears and Roque then leaves Elmas to greet the Pride in the morning. Eliora finally reaches the Jocasta slave pride and lands near Mwezi to find out if any useful information has been discovered.
Mwezi greets Eliora and tells her what little information she has. She suspects that the slaves are too afraid to confess anything, and doubts that any useful information will be found by any of the spies.
In the Haides slave pride, Lumiar begins the hunt with the rest of the hunting party, led by the ambitious slave driver Tiarak.
Haraka, the ex-prince of a peaceful pride, works hard to bring prey back to the Pride Premier for their dinner. As a domestic slave, he is forced to work under the orders of the warriors and centurions who control his slave pride. He is punished by the slave driver of his slave pride when she mistakes his snarl of pain for a snarl of aggression. The leopardess embarrasses herself after tripping on a rock that Haraka didn't notice before. His curiosity is awakened by the mysterious rock that caused the leopardess to embarrass herself in front of the hundreds of domestic slaves.
Na'hina, the beautiful blind slave girl of the imperial consul, Nafsi, tries her best to reassure her master that she won't betray him or turn into a rebel. She helps prepare for Nafsi's feast, but grows anxious at the sound of other miiitary officials approaching Nafsi's den. As a slave with powers, she should be killed. She looks to Nafsi for guidance on the situation, she should extinguish the flame on her tail, however she won't be able to do it for long.
Back at the military outpost, Kaimu and Kulaani are questioned by Nillis, the lion in charge of the outpost. Willis, has the power to distinguish when someone is lying, and when he catches Kaimu lying about the existence of their powers, Nillis knows. Immediately the two are engaged in a battle with the guards at the outpost. They are overcome by the guards, and Nillis invites them to consider joining the Pride Premier since he finds their abilities unique. He decides to take them on a tour of the kingdom so that they can properly consider the invitation, but takes them to a cell before doing so.
