Inspired by a Journal entry I came across on deviantArt. I can't remember if we've had a thread like this in the past, but I always find it really interesting to hear what thought went into creating online usernames So, what is your story? This is mine... Quite long, because, heck, I've lived with it for almost a decade now xP "Kanu" was a word I got off a Lion King fan site in 2002 that listed some random African words and their meanings (so people could use them for their characters, I guess). Kanu supposedly meant "wild cat" and I thought that that had the best meaning, thus I chose that name for my persona lioness even though I didn't think it sounded that cool, or particularly feminine for that matter, to begin with. (And to this day I haven't seen many other female Kanus... I don't think there are any others I know of in the TLK community.) But I found the name's meaning rather than how it sounded to be the most important, so I stuck with it, and now I could never let it go xP I made my full username "Kanu, the golden lioness", but after about a year I grew too tired of typing out the full name all the time (it is soo loong), so then I ended up with "KanuTGL". And that is the way it has remained since then. Kanu will be ten years old this winter...! I wish I could find out the exact day she was created, but alas, that e-mail history is long gone. I never questioned the name meaning until a couple of years ago either... Turns out that "kanu" in Swahili means "genet", not "wild cat", (genets are really cool animals, but still... xD) and that the name Kanu is a male name from India and can mean either "handsome" or something related to some thunder god... Uhm, whoops. But, like I said, I could never let go of it now Outside of the TLK community I like to go by "Akeruru", which is some joke "Japan-ized" version of my character Axell's name. But I this time really liked the sound of it, rather than the meaning, so I kept it =P

Post by Leorgathar on May 29, 2012 8:32:07 GMT
That's a very interesting origin Hmm I don't think I've ever met another Kanu anywhere. I think it has a nice ring to it, actually ^^ As for me, Leorgathar is... well... this... guy ^^ I drew this character back in 2005. In the beginning he was just "Leor", then I wanted to give him a name with more syllables, but I still wanted it to start with Leor-. Afterwards, I just came up with the rest of the name naturally, and since it didn't show any results when I googled it, I thought it was perfect and kept it xD. Leorgathar is a character that appears in a science fiction story I had been writing back then, which I had given a temporary title as "The Last Son of Serslar". It was about 2 brothers in the 90's who in a weird accident get transported to a strange and different planet. Lost and without any indication of where to go, they are found by gigantic wild creatures who are hostile at first, but then turn out to be very intelligent, and get to be very curious about the humans. The leader of their pack is Leorgathar, and along with his sons, Syrgantur and Syriargot, they try to communicate with the humans however they can, and eventually help them figure out how to return them to where they belong. I had planned it as a story told from the point of view of each of the races, and I wanted to make a planet with a whole new biodiversity and terrains, go into detail with every new creature that was there. I didn't want to make aliens superior in technology, but more wild and primitive. But the years passed and I eventually had to reduce the amount of work I put on it. Then I finally decided to abandon the concept around the time James Cameron's Avatar came out. Of course, story wise mine had no similarities with it at all, but the idea of a planet full of a new biodiversity and the wild and primitive alien race were there -_- At least my aliens weren't humanoids that looked like furries, like Cameron's ¬¬ but the rest of the animals looked quite much like what I had in mind, and since the movie came in conflict with my ideas like that, I just decided to move on to something else. Still, I have kept with the prologue and the first chapter, as well as with a background story I have somewhere in my files, hehe. You can at least read the prologue here, for if you find it interesting I haven't stopped writing stories, though, right now I'm working on one set in prehispanic Mexico with Eagles and Jaguars among other animals as characters, I might shed some light on that one someday

Post by Kirsui on May 30, 2012 13:41:37 GMT
Huh, I don't actually remember any more how I originally came up with the name Kirsui. It has its roots in my real name, just added in a letter and apparently thought it sounded cool. It still does, I think.
As for the character that has that name... Now that's a different story. I don't like lions as much as some other animals, but the name has stuck with her since 2005 and I can't really change it now, can I? xD Sometimes I use that name on other characters that aren't lions though, mostly in games. She got a surname (Lumiatar) at one point too when I played Neverwinter Nights. I don't really use the surname much though, unless I really need one. *shrug*
I do have another nick I go by at very random times, and once again mostly only in games. I came up with Elennah long before I even had thought about Kirsui, but connecting that nick to a character didn't happen until a few years ago. The name's basically just my second name written backwards, but I thought it sounded awesome and elvish or something like that. xD
The character sharing that name is a firefox. They have a part in the Finnish mythology, most importantly in the creation of the Northern lights. I've always liked that particular feature about them, so when I finally realized I could create a character for Elennah.... yeah, you can see what happened. :3 Unfortunately, since she's a firefox, I don't think you'll be seeing her much around here since I can't really RP her on this forum. xD

Mine is grayeyedlion because my character is of a bloodline with a genetic quirk that allows the grayish/blue color to stay past adolescence when most lions' eyes change to yellow-brown or some such color. Not everyone in his family has the gray eyes but Meho does and so does his cub, Amirah.

Mine actually was stolen from the name of a castle! I was on vacation in the summer in St. Augustine, FL a loooong time ago, and we have a real, honest-to-God castle there. St. Augustine is the oldest city in the United States, too, so that added to the intrigue. The castle was built for a fabulous, crazy old lady who liked to have fancy things. She wore crazy outfits and demanded that everyone treated her like a princes... her castle was named after her--"Zorayda's Castle". At least, that is one of the stories I've heard, though it may not be historically accurate. I thought the name "Zorayda" was rather beautiful, and while riding in the car on the road trip back home, I started drawing a character that I thought would match the fabulousity and grandeur of the name and of the woman I'd heard about. Hence, Zorry got wings, earrings, bright colors... you know the rest. She became my favorite character and I began to use her everywhere. When I discovered the Internet (lolz), I used the name as my tag, and it's stuck ever since. I'm not complaining, though... it's a neat name with an awesome history behind it.

The origin of my username is from my own character Moto. I came up with him before coming here and since he had the ability to control and summon fire I wanted my username to be the swahili word for fire which is Moto.

Now that's cool, Zorry! I like when there's a neat story behind usernames xD And hey, looks like my ol' Sumai's got some competition in Moto then!

Yup, the same except for the firebreath it seems I don't think they'd get along though - Sumai is not really a very nice fellow... xD

Then I think it would be best if he just simply avoided talking to him.I can't possibly imagine what would happen if they fought each other.

Jessamine is my Disney Fairy name and Diane is special. By that I mean if I were a Disney Fairy my name would be Jessamine, and that's the name I choose on the virtual Pixie Hollow. Diane is the name of someone in my family who died before I was born.

Azylumin... Well, before I started DA I was really fond of my Nickname or the Word Neko, and I would attch the japanese noun to Lemur and owl or my Nickname, Sheza (Shortened from Shezalanco) Anyway, When I turned 13 I wanted a unique username that I could use as a Hand. I love Zs and Ys so it had to be in there. Eventually, after five minutes (And I remember the seconds ticking) I typed this fantasy name in. After writng it, submitting my profile, I told my mother. She them told me, being multi linguistic, that it sounded like. The word for "Death Angel' and another Language. Being Christian, I found me very annoyed at myself. After a year of using the username, I went to other sites and continued to use it, classifying that It was a fantasy word and unique, not matter what it sounded like. And I've ben Azy ever since.

*joining very late*
My name is simple, I have a HUGE fangirl type crush on Draco Malfoy/Tom Felton and Peeta Mellark/Josh Hutcherson.
My other username the one that the older users know, (Zor, TL, Kanu and Sui) 'Tura' was a character I created for a novel I attempted years ago, it was a rune name and if I remember rightly it was originally 'Turaz' and the rune meant wealth and good fortune but I decided to change it to Alina (from the book Fell) then Aria (I just thought the name would suit) then Luna (she was born during a Lunar Eclipse) As you can tell I can never decide a name I like for any of my creative writing, it is now Aluna which means 'come here' in Swahili and Aluna is a character from my Creative writing who is a Neko who attends a mythical creature boarding school and I use her in my creative writing now (luckily this name WILL stick haha).
I do still use Tura though if you search XMizzTuraX on google the entire first page (at least when I search it) is all my different accounts (Wattpad, twitter, fanfiction etc etc.)but with the same name because now nearly everyone I know associates me with Tura so y'know haha.
Anyway I'm rambling but that is the origin of my current user name and old username(s)

Post by Leto on Aug 11, 2013 19:48:28 GMT
Oh man, I've had a lot of internet names over the years. There's nothing really that amazing or interesting about my current user name sadly. I suppose it does have a little story though: I am avid fan of the Frank Herbert's Dune series of novels as well as the movies (yes even the 1980ts bombshell I enjoyed), and Leto was my favorite character in the books. So i took that name for TLK character I made back in 2005 for an RP on Lilymud, though that Leto and the current Leto has nothing to do with eachother. So yeah, the name Leto was essencially stolen from Frank Herbert! *is so creative*

*new* After changing my name I decided to explain where THIS username is from, it's suimple really Shadowhunters are these beings in a book series I read (The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices) and they're half angel half human's who are in a neverending war against demons and forsaken (sometimes downworlders - Vampires, Warlocks and Lycans) and Carstairs is the surname of the character Jem Carstairs from the Infernal Devices, he's a Shadowhunter and my favourite one from the prequels.
