Name: Najah
Nickname: -
Species: Lion
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Female
Description:
Najah has short, almost stumpy legs and isn’t quite as long bodied as most lions, giving her a slightly stockier, compact build. Her coat is a light, orangey peach, as is the tufted ‘fringe’ she sports on her forehead. Her ears are both a complimentary pale brown, as is a reasonably sized patch of fur on her back while the tuft at the tip of her tail is a much darker and slightly muddier shade of brown. The fur of her inner ear, muzzle, underbelly and paws are a paler, creamy colour. Her nose is a natural pink and she has hazel coloured eyes.
Behaviour:
She can take control when necessary, but is perfectly happy to follow so long as she doesn’t strongly disagree with a proposed course of action. She prefers being in a group to being on her own but needs space to breathe, she finds actively socialising with others for a prolonged period of time a bit draining.
She’s fairly laidback, but with a stubborn streak and a natural desire to defend those who are downtrodden or just plain misunderstood. Her calm nature allows her to keep her head in a fight; though it can stifle her creativity as she aims instead for precision.
She’s not naturally impulsive and can’t make snap decisions. She will almost always hesitate and try to buy time in order to think her options through thoroughly, trusting reason and logic over emotions or gut feelings. Failing that she’ll defer to someone who can make a quick decision rather than risk making the wrong one herself and having to deal with the guilt afterwards.
History:
Najah was the first born daughter of the king in a now decimated pride. She and her younger brother, Warith, were among a handful to survive the sudden and severe drought that, unfortunately, coincided with an unknown and devastating illness. Of those that survived the disease, many succumbed to dehydration and very few had the strength to journey far enough and reach the nearest remaining water source. Realising the futility in returning home, the small group set out in search of a more prosperous land. However, when a large pack of hyenas decided the group were easy prey, Najah fronted the counter attack and became separated from the others. She’s been travelling alone ever since, hoping to find and rejoin what little family she has left, presuming of course that they survived.
Before all of this devastation, Najah had been brought up primarily by her mother. Her father had been equally attentive until Warith’s birth, at which point he began grooming his son to one day take his place as king and, subsequently, Najah became an afterthought to him. She loved her mother of course, but she’d always been a bit of a daddy’s girl at heart and this sudden withdrawal sparked Najah’s desire to prove herself worthy of his attention. She persuaded the pride elders to teach her about the many kings of the past and their differing methods when it came to ruling the pride. She also spent a lot of time watching and mimicking the fights between adolescent male lions, fights she began to participate in herself when she hit adolescence, despite her mother’s protests.
The pride she was born into holds some basic religious beliefs. The details can vary between individuals, but as a whole the pride believes the world is watched over by a number of deities taking the form of a herd of buffalo. The herd is headed by a dominant male, the creator, who protects the land and enacts change with the assistance of younger male gods. It is, however, the goddesses who make the decisions by way of a vote. There are an odd number of females in the herd so indecision is rare, but not entirely unheard of. They decide everything from which direction the wind will blow from to who lives and who dies. A popular, though not universal belief is that when you die you become a calf in the herd, protected for the rest of eternity by the great gods and, thusly, enjoying an afterlife free of worry or responsibility.
Eating Habits:
Due to her religious beliefs she will not eat Buffalo.
While it’s not believed that the gods value buffalos above other animals or that they would consider buffalos being eaten to be any kind of insult, refusing to eat them is considered a form of respect. It’s an active, personal choice not to ‘bite the hand that feeds you’, so to speak.
