Considering as how the idea of the RP is that there's not many lions around any more, your char could have become an orphan or gotten somehow separated from his parents and gotten lost, perhaps?

I'm sure there's some other ways to fit him in too, those are just the two that come to my mind at the moment.

I have to agree with Kirsui's points, oftentimes when it comes to cubs the easiest way to introduce them into an RP is to basically say they somehow got seperated from their parents.
Of course how they got seperated can be any way you wish, perhaps the parents simply lost track of their cub while traveling, maybe they were attack and the cub was told to run to safety (and then was unable to find the parents again in which case you could say they are presumed dead)

It's just a matter of being as creative as you see fit.
